TDCJ has video relay service (VRS) calling for eligible hearing–impaired inmates. VRS is a service that provides people who are deaf or hard of hearing (HoH) with equal access to the public telephone network.

In order to receive calls from an inmate, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) requires that you register and meet the following requirements:

  1. The name on your driver's license must match the name on your telephone service bill/listing.

  2. You must agree to the following conditions:
    • You are the registered owner of the phone that will receive calls from the inmate
    • You will allow inmate calls to this phone
    • You are at least 18 years old
    • You will not forward calls, make 3-way calls or use a speakerphone on calls received from the inmate
    • You understand that eligible inmates are not allowed to speak to any adult that is not listed on their Approved Calling List

  3. The TDCJ # for the inmate.

In addition to the requirements above, you must agree to the following TDCJ rules for VRS Calls.

  • No nudity.
  • No showing body parts, inappropriate touching or masturbating by the inmate or person on the video phone.
  • Must be fully dressed.
  • Only appropriate behavior and conversation by the inmate and person on the video phone.
  • Only one person is allowed on the video phone at a time.

To register your phone, be sure to select option 1 to enroll after selecting the English or Spanish option. Then choose option 1 to enroll your phone number. You must call from the phone number you are registering.
